William Paulet, 4th Marquess of Winchester

William Paulet, 4th Marquess of Winchester (bef. 1560 – 4 February 1628) was the son of William Paulet, 3rd Marquess of Winchester and Agnes Howard. He married Lady Lucy Cecil, daughter of Sir Thomas Cecil, 1st Earl of Exeter and Dorothy Neville. Lucy and William had six children:

  1. William Paulet, Lord St John (1587/8–1621), married Mary Browne, daughter of Anthony-Maria Browne, 2nd Viscount Montagu
  2. Lord Thomas Paulet (d. bef. 1621)
  3. John Paulet, 5th Marquess of Winchester (c.1598–1675) married 1) Jane Savage, daughter of Thomas Savage, 1st Viscount Savage, and 2) Honora de Burgh.
  4. Lord Henry Paulet, of Amport, married Lucy Philpot, daughter of Sir George Philpot of Thruxton
  5. Lord Charles Paulet (d. c.1654), without issue
  6. Lord Edward Paulet

Often mis-attributed to the 4th Marquis in multiple sources online including ancestry.com, genealogy.com and some of the references below is

Elizabeth Pawlett (or Paulet) later Countess of Essex by becoming the second wife of Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex)

She was the second daughter of Sir William Pawlett, of Edington, Wiltshire. Sir William was the eldest of five children by the William Paulet, 3rd Marquess of Winchester, and his mistress Jane Lambert. Elizabeth is therefore the John Paulet, 5th Marquess of Winchester's cousin.
